Encomara provide a unique quick connect system for FOWT mooring and cables supported by strategic consultancy for offshore systems and moorings.

In June 2025, Encomara became part of Aurora Energy Services, which enables a robust platform for the delivery of innovative floating offshore wind technologies and services. Aurora provides fabrication, subsea engineering, technical manpower, inspection, integrity, and specialist access services to clients across renewables, conventional energy and decommissioning.

Encomara Squid

Inspired by the fixed offshore wind sector’s ability to scale-up successfully, Encomara’s approach mirrors this by enabling high operability installation, high-volume manufacturing of standardised hardware, and pre-installation of all marine and subsea interfaces.

Following a significant research and development investment, the firm’s pioneering  methodology uses the company’s patented SQUID to provide a comparable level of installation efficiency and cost savings for the floating wind sector.

The technology allows for the pre-installation and pre-commissioning of all moorings and power cables, enabling rapid connection and earlier first power from multiple turbines.

SQUID integrates all associated marine hardware components, such as power cables and connectors, mooring lines and anchor interfaces to provide a rapid and simplified ‘Plug to Power’(P2P) capability drastically reducing the direct CAPEX and duration of FOWT installation. By solving the ‘Tow to Port’ (T2P) challenge, SQUID delivers similar cost and duration reductions during the operational, re-power and decommissioning phases.

about

Formed in 2022, Encomara brings together industry leading experts who have used their extensive experience in marine, vessel, renewables, and subsea sectors to examine, understand and solve the project execution challenges associated with the commercial scale deployment installation of floating wind structures.

The team consists of:

Ian Donald Headshot

Ian Donald

Managing Director

Ian has over 40 years fulfilling board, executive, technical and project management roles within the operator, major service companies and SME environments with demonstrable success.

As founder member and CEO of DES Operations and Enpro Subsea, Ian has a proven history of taking marine innovations from concept to commercialised products and developing teams to evolve these innovative products into leading companies.

He holds a Master’s degree in Marine Technology from Strathclyde University, an MBA in Energy Transition from Robert Gordon University, multiple patents for offshore and subsea systems, and is recipient of engineering and business achievement awards.

Malcolm Bowie

Technical Director

Prior to joining Encomara as CTO and patent holder, Malcolm has been an independent consultant and advisor in design and offshore construction 35 years. In his capacity as an industry technical authority on moorings, anchors, risers and floating systems he has worked on a wide range of high-profile projects world-wide.

With over 20 years’ experience in wind, wave and tidal, he is now heavily involved in an advisory role with floating wind, providing extensive insight and addressing the challenges in the market to various organisations and developers.

Malcolm earned a BSc in Physics and Engineering from Stirling University and postgraduate from Robert Gordons University in Aberdeen. As a Patron of the National Museums of Scotland and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland he is passionate about energy, the environment and sustainability.

Lisa Tomkins

Consultancy Director

Lisa is approaching 30 years’ experience in the energy sector across both oil & gas and renewables with over 10 of these years operating as an independent consultant principally in various leadership, project, engineering and management roles in offshore construction, de-commissioning, subsea operations and more recently renewables.

Prior to joining Encomara, Lisa held key roles in solutions assurance, technical engineering, and project management, bringing a wealth of experience across the full project lifecycle—from preparatory and feasibility stages to development and execution. Having worked with leading energy companies, offshore contractors, and specialized entities, Lisa has gained invaluable insight into projects of all sizes, from smaller initiatives to large-scale field developments. With a focus on adaptability to meet diverse project needs, Lisa seeks a collaborative, results-oriented approach, prioritising efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This commitment extends to building strong client relationships and championing excellence in project delivery across the team.

Lisa holds a Bachelor’s Honours degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Dundee and was a recipient of the David Smith Award in Civil Engineering.

Tom Bryce

Marketing Manager

Tom has over 35 years’ experience in the offshore energy sector.  He held senior business development roles at Varco (NOV) and DES Operations before founding Enpro Subsea with Ian Donald in 2011.
